do you write a card to a 1 year old?!

October 6, 2017

OK — so the last of this series. We've already talked about "outside the box" gift ideas to bring to a one year old's birthday party 2 posts back. Then, we talked about educational toys for infants and toddlers in case you wanted to do a combo gift, or you just really wanted to buy something for the birthday baby, in the last post. Now, for the final thought... Do you write a card?!

We all know baby can't read yet. Will Mom or Dad read the card to the baby?! Or will they save it for when they can read and understand it themselves?! Maybe we just opt to write the card to the parents, since they're going to be the ones reading it anyways...

Here's what my poll group had to say on this:

A card really isn't necessary, but if you're going to write one, write it to the baby! Maybe the parents will save the card for when baby is older. Maybe you write something you love about them, or a funny memory for him or her to read later... Maybe something you wish upon that baby... Many moms admitted though that most cards end up in the recycle bin, but if it was a well written card (not just the generic card message with your name at the bottom), it may make the "keep" pile. There can be lots of things to save for later, so omitting the card is really no big deal if you're really not sure what to write!

Plus, cards are getting expensive these days! My suggestion — Trader Joe's! 99 cents gets you a nice card! Yes, there are nicer cards out there, but you'll pay for them! Only down side, you have to keep an eye out for them every time you're there, because their selection isn't huge, and they may not have what you want when you need it. Flip side is, their inventory is constantly changing, so again, check often!

Lastly, are you the one having the party?! Have you thought about your invitations, or thank yous?! Book your 8-9 month photography session with me and voilà! You'll have a custom invitation! And, why not reserve a 1 year milestone session (a few weeks prior to the party), and get custom thank you cards as well! The birthday baby can say thank you themselves, and show off how much they're growing in just a few short months! (Also an easy way to share some photos with your close friends and family!). Did these last 3 posts help in regards to what to bring to a 1 year old's birthday party?! I hope so! And, if you have any other ideas, I'd love to hear about them below!
